Role & Responsibilities: We are looking to engage enthusiastic and motivated individuals for a student job or internship in support of the activities of the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) Secretariat, administered by Seascape Belgium with several options, in particular: a) Providing communication and organisational support for flagship EMODnet events and activities working with the communication and organisational team. The incumbent will work under the guidance of the EMODnet Communications Team, and gain an understanding of the European marine knowledge landscape and acquire skills in event organisation and stakeholder engagement. The work would entail among others contribute to the EMODnet Secretariat’s organisational activities for the EMODnet Open Sea Lab 4.0 Hackathon (taking place Spring 2024) and 4th EMODnet Open Conference (Autumn 2024), and other events/workshops as needed. This includes supporting the EMODnet Communications Team with and contributing to the following tasks, among others: attending internal progress meetings as well as meetings with external (co-organising) parties, taking meeting notes and keeping track of action lists; visiting potential event venues in Belgium; contributing to preparing event agendas; preparing timeline of activities in the run-up to the events; stakeholder mapping and preparing and sending out targeted invites for speakers and other types of invitees; following up on responses; developing a clear and effective communication strategy/plan; preparing a social media editorial calendar; preparing social media content for the promotion of the events. b) Supporting data analysis, GIS management, web-developments, ICT solutions, data and product assessments, data services and digital twin ocean applications working with Seascape’s Technical Team. In this role, (s)he will strengthen the technical team to support the delivery and monitoring of EMODnet data services, working in partnership with experts across Europe to improve the availability and accessibility of marine data for all. The position will also involve interaction with other data initiatives and implementation of related European and international collaborative projects. The incumbent will work under the guidance of the Seascape Technical Coordinator and Senior GIS Expert. The successful candidate will have experience with relevant GIS and ICT tools, geospatial data infrastructures and platforms. Good understanding of geospatial data formats, web standards and associated software is required. c) Support EMODnet for Global initiatives and contributions to among others the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development as a Decade Implementing Partner.
Profiel
? Applicants for the student job must be at least in their second (or later) year of a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline, preferably in any of the following domains: communication or biological sciences, oceanography, environmental sciences, ICT and web-development, geospatial information systems or other relevant area (e.g. geography, geology, engineering, …); ? Applicants for the internship must have already completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree or PhD in a relevant discipline (see above); ? Excellent standard of spoken and written English (working language). Knowledge of the local language (Dutch) would be an advantage as well as any other European language; ? Strong work ethic for working transparently with open communication and ability to work both individually and as a team player; ? Ability to report progress and issues in an effective manner internally and externally at group meetings; ? Excellent organisational skills with capacity to deliver on allocated tasks and meet deadlines; ? Be able to build successful and productive relationships with stakeholders, user groups and other project team members; ? Understanding of marine science and/or the marine research and data landscape in Belgium and/or Europe would be useful but is not essential.
