Nuclear Safety Design Engineer

Job description

 

Within the framework of the SMR-LFR project, the Innovative Nuclear Systems (INS) Institute is looking for an experienced team member to join the ‘Reactor Safety’ (RSA) unit. He/she, will be responsible for carrying out safety analyses and determining safety-oriented design specifications. He/she will determine the safety requirements for the reactor systems and verify the appropriate integration of these requirements in the design. He/she will also identify the research and development activities needed to support the safety demonstration. The goal is to support the design with the implementation of safety requirements and the timely delivery of the necessary information, including safety design criteria and validated safety analysis of the design, for the preparation of the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR), for the reactor licence application. More specifically:

  • perform safety analyses mainly thermohydraulic and strongly linked to neutronics (i.e. reactivity events)
  • define safety-oriented design basis requirements to enable the definition of appropriate design specifications
  • collaborate with the design and R&D teams and support them in their work to implement safety requirements into the design and validate the safety assessment tools
  • take responsibility for the objectives assigned to him/her and adapt appropriately to changes in the project planning
  • report to the RSA unit head on the progress and planning of the attributed safety tasks

Profile

  • Master's degree in (Nuclear) Engineering or Sciences
  • experience with and knowledge of nuclear reactor theory is required, more specifically knowledge of reactivity-insertion events in a nuclear reactor and reactor feedbacks
  • experience with system thermohydraulic software (Relap and/or Cathare) is a strong asset
  • experience in safety assessment of nuclear installations, knowledge of innovative reactor designs is an additional asset
  • good teamwork skills and the ability to build good interdisciplinary working relationships and to integrate multiple technical inputs to solve complex problems
  • good social and communication skills, including a good command of oral and written English
  • pragmatic, dynamic with a positive 'can do' attitude and commitment
  • willing to travel for short periods of up to one week to attend congresses, courses, etc. in Europe and the US.
